What is this board and what does it do?

Who are we?

The main posters on here are from all grades of the business, mostly freelancers and predominantly Producers, Directors, Production Managers and the like.

Have you achieved anything?

Lots. The original TVWRAP (Television Workers Rights Advocacy Petition) campaign directly resulted in the DTI publishing new guidelines for work experience in the industry. It also raised awareness of the issues of illegally long working hours, unfairly withheld holiday pay and illegal unpaid work. As a result most companies, big and small, examined their working practices and brought them into line with the law. Almost every single TV company now either offers properly constructed work experience or pays all their workers directly as a result of this campaign. A few are still at it, trying to zig zag their way round the law, but we're watching...

The SWEAT (Stop Work Experience Abuse Today) campaign was born as a result of TVWRAP. In the 18 months of its existence it has successfully "encouraged" the BBC to actively address their work experience practices after this thread, and (to mention just a few) all of these threads have resulted in junior workers being paid their legal entitlement.

Direct action by the members on this thread also resulted in Production Base refusing to accept any more adverts for unpaid work, and forcing Shooting People, Talent Circle and mandy.com to issue warnings on their sites and filter out the worst offenders (with, it has to be said, mixed success). The information gathered in these threads is also sent on to the Low Pay Commission every year to feed into their annual report on the operation of the National Minimum Wage.

It works.
